Pardon Me

Forgive me father for I have sinned…. It’s been a year since the incident.

Today, I celebrate a dysfunctional holiday with my dysfunctional family. This year, Everyone returned home. Everyone except my cousin, Lucas. He never returns because his house is really huge and so he hosts his own party.

Uncle Jeremy, who practically owns an airline, flew home in style. Aunt Linda, drove home with her new turkish boyfriend. He wasn’t invited but then again, how can you invite someone you didn’t know existed?

After the greetings and conversations, we all went inside. The house was full and really hot. My little nephews were screaming all over the place. I took one look at “the new boyfriend” and I was wondering how long he’d last.

“Ding”

It was dinner time.

We were all at the table when suddenly, the boyfriend stood up and started reciting the grace. The entire family looked at him but said nothing.

He went on.

“Bless us, O Lord, and these, Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.”

“Amen” Everyone echoed

“Linda!, this one is not so bad” Uncle Jeremy Joked

“At least he outlasted all the other boyfriends that have come before” Uncle Jeremy continued

Most people laughed. Some kept eating. Others were greatly anticipating a response from the target. It was like a scene from my favorite telenovela but better. Aunt Linda just kept smiling and her boyfriend did not seem to mind. Perhaps he was warned beforehand or …

“Welcome to the family”  Sarcastic Sandra whispered

At that moment, I too had a thought in my heart, “…Forgive me father for all my sins. I know it was not my place to judge, but as Cousin Lucas always said, it’s tough being a turkey”

Happy Thanksgiving.

Dear reader, What are you thankful for?
